Example letter: Please reword things to make them your own. Express your concern for safety in Nicaragua based on what has happened to Jason.
Please Everyone - It is TIME TO ACT. Let's get this monthly letter campaign out there. If you find any other addresses or links to tourist places in Nicaragua please post them.
----------------------------------------- To the Nicaraguan Tourism Board,
I am writing to express my concern about American Jason Puracal, who is currently imprisoned on false charges of drug trafficking, money laundering an organized crime.
Jason, an American citizen living in working in San Juan del Sur, was arrested over a year ago. Held for over nine months before going to trial, Jason was convicted this fall and sentenced to 22 years in prison. Continually denied due process and the right to defend himself, Jason has suffered serious human rights violations.
This makes me worried about traveling to Nicaragua. I want to know what is being done by your organization to make sure that Americans traveling, living and retiring to Nicaragua are kept safe. I want to know how your organization will make sure that there will never be another horrific story of wrongful imprisonment like Jason's again.
Until then, I will continue to warn friends and family about the dangers they may encounter when traveling to Nicaragua.

Do you think it might also be a good idea to draft letters to some prominent travel agencies in the United States? I think that would be a way to show the Nicaraguan authorities that we are really serious about this We could send the letter to the Nicaraguan Tourism Board and do cc's to travel agencies here. That way they would see that we mean what we say about warning people of the dangers of travel to Nicaragua. What does everyone else think of that?

We could also send the letters to other Niciraguan travel agencies. Do you want to draft the letter?

I'm not really a qualified letter-writer.

I don't have much travel experience and no experience at all with travel agencies so I don't know what would constitute a prominent travel agency. Is there anyone around with alot of travel experience who could give us a list (small or large) of some prominent agencies so we can compile a list of websites and/or addresses to send the letters to?

The following letter can be used on it’s own and sent directly to a travel agency/agencies in your own area possibly cc’ing the Nicaraguan Tourism Board.
Another option is to use the draft/create your own letter Sarah posted above drafted to the Nicaraguan Tourism Board and just cc a copy of that letter to travel agency/agencies in your own area.
This way, the Nicaraguan Tourism Board will know that we are serious about warning others of travel to Nicaragua.
To [Travel Agency],
I am writing because of a situation in Nicaragua that I’ve become aware of. I believe my fellow Americans should not travel to a foreign country without being aware of any dangers which travel to that country may entail.
Jason Puracal, an American citizen living in working in San Juan del Sur, was arrested over a year ago. Held for over nine months before going to trial, Jason was convicted this fall and sentenced to 22 years in prison. Continually denied due process and the right to defend himself, Jason has suffered serious human rights violations.
The specifics of this case and another recent case of an American in Nicaragua make me very worried about traveling to Nicaragua and I strongly believe that any other American contemplating doing so should be informed. Please take the time to inform any prospective clients of the dangers they may encounter in traveling to Nicaragua.
Thank you.

Is the consensus that we are sending the letters to the tourism board via e-mail?
